Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, is the most important traditional festival of the Chinese nation. In ancient times, it was called “the beginning of the year,” symbolizing the start of a new year. It marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring, lasting from New Year's Eve (the eve of the first day of the new year) to the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. The specific dates for each year's Spring Festival are calculated and announced by the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences—China's sole modern calendar-compilation institution—based on the rules of the Chinese lunar calendar and using Beijing Time as the standard.

Although the traditional Chinese calendar is actually a lunisolar calendar rather than a purely lunar one, it is sometimes referred to in English as the “Lunar New Year” , This isn't entirely accurate. For non-Chinese communities, “Chinese New Year” remains the most widely used translation. Beyond the Han Chinese population within Greater China, 29 of China's 55 ethnic minorities also celebrate the Spring Festival. South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines all designate it as a public holiday.

The Spring Festival, a traditional Chinese festival rich in meaning and substance, has been inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2024, owing to its vast participation and extensive influence.

Wishing you a happy and prosperous new year!
